Keep out of trouble,
By lounging beside the beach,
In this humble place.
Country number 3 on mine and my wife's Central American adventure in 2015.
We had scared ourselves a little by reading about the dangers of San Salvador. I'm not sure what the truth really is, but we decided to play it safe by keeping a low profile once we arrived. Luckily, we met up with a friend of mine who took us for a drink at a cool bar with a live jazz band. The next day, we headed off to Playa El Tunco, on the Pacific coast. It's a surfer hangout - and while neither of us are surfers, we enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere and views of the Pacific ocean. We were staying up the hill away from the beach, which was a bit of a walk but offered really nice views of the coast, especially from the hammock and the swimming pool.
All in all, we didn't consider El Salvador to be as exciting or as beautiful as some of its neighbouring countries, and perhaps it's less safe too (though maybe not). But it has a modest and humble charm.
