San Marino

Country #49

City on the hill,
With luscious views all around,
Oldest Republic.

In 2014, I spent a long weekend in and around San Marino, starting off my journey with some delicious pasta in Bologna. I took a coach up the winding roads to San Marino and enjoyed the views as we ascended.

San Marino itself is, well, very small. But it's also pretty beautiful, and the views across to Italy are fantastic. The Three Towers are wonderful as well, and they make you cast your mind back hundreds of years when they were properly used as bastions of strength and defence. The city was pretty crowded when I was there, and I was less impressed by the abundance of souvenir shops which reminded me in some ways of Mont Saint-Michel, but when I found a bit of open space to myself, it was much more pleasant.
